This is an important step as it marks the beginning of the visible implementation of teamwork in the workplace and sees the 'birth' of the team. All the team members are gathered for a briefing session to communicate the objectives of teamwork, the Stage 3 vision for the team, team structure and roles of the team leader and the date for the formal team building. It is therefore crucial that the team leader's roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, agreed and accepted by everyone at the start of the implementation process. Careful consideration also needs to be given to the appointment of the team leader. The generic role of the team leader, guidelines for the structuring of the team leadership and the vision for team empowerment would have been defined during a Site Steering Committee Workshop, which should have happened prior to this implementation action. The way the team is structured will be influenced by the vision of the work team. When designing and structuring teams, factors such as the process type, the natural work group, team size, flexibility requirements, common goals, shared resources, equipment ownership and continuity need to be considered. Note: A number of important strategic decisions need to have been made by the Site Steering Committee (SSC) in a workshop, e.g. the degree of team autonomy and empowerment, the generic team leadership roles and structures as well as the inclusion of temporary workers.
